SAN DIEGO, Calif.–The third-seeded University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team (12-7, 7-2 Big West) swept the sixth-seed CSUN (8-9, 4-5 BWC), 4-0 in their opening round of the Big West Championship tournament. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine advance to a Friday semifinal showdown against No. 2 seed Cal Poly at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.. It marked UH’s ninth win via a sweep this season.
Hawai’i captured the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead. UH’s No. 3 duo of Nidhi Surapaneni and Ana Vilcek nearly shutout CSUN’s Jenna Dorian and Victoria Santibanez Luna, 6-1 to lead things off. The Matadors’ Jolene Coetzee and Ana Toboso Fraile defeated UH’s Léa Romain and Satsuki Takamura, 6-2 to even things up. But UH’s senior pairing of Gitte Heynemans and Tal Talya Zandberg knocked off Ekaterina Repina and Sasha Turchak. 6-3 on the No. 2 court to win the doubles point.
