HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women’s soccer team’s home opener did not go as planned Saturday, falling in a 1-0 decision to Cal State East Bay at Saint Louis Field.
The game’s lone score came from the Pioneer’s Abigail Kern who, following a corner kick, was in the right place at the right time. At the 15-minute mark of the first half, an East Bay corner kick was pinballed in the front of the net. In the ensuing scrum for possession of the ball, Kern managed to get a piece of it, which was just enough to trickle into the net.
Although the Silverswords, who suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 3-1, were able to get nine shots at the net, few were able to put CSUEB keeper Jordan Smith in an awkward position on the Chaminade attack.
Cal State East Bay (2-1-1), last year’s CCAA Tournament champions, managed six first-half shots but the ‘Swords’ defense was able to hold them to just a single look at the net in the final 45 minutes.
Savannah Breeze Miranda (Aiea, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Aiea) attempted a team-high three shots in coming off the bench for Chaminade. Ruby Burroughs (Santa Clarita, Calif./California Baptist/William Hart HS) took two shots for the home team.
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made two saves while Smith had three for CSUEB.
The Silversword are next in action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they face longtime in-city rival Hawai’i Pacific University at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
