HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women’s basketball team on Saturday fell to the University of Hawai’i Hilo by a count of 70-52 at McCabe Gymnasium.
Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) had a game-high 12 points while Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) added seven points and a career-high 12 rebounds for the Silverswords who dropped their second straight to an in-state rival this week.
Martinez also tied her season best with eight boards for Chaminade, which fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The junior guard also had four of the team’s seven assists.
Olivia Crigler (Hebron, Ky./Pacific Union College/Holy Cross HS) and Lishae Scanlan (Aiea, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Pearl City) each added six points, the latter being a season high.
Mandi Kawaha led the Vulcans (4-3, 1-1 PacWest) with 18 points.
The ‘Swords actually out-crashed UH Hilo on the boards by a 48-to-38 margin including 15 offensive rebounds but could only cash them in for eight second-chance points.
Chaminade had the opening points of the game, a short jumper in the paint by Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy) but the Vulcans countered with the next seven points to take the lead for good.
UH Hilo led by as many as 14 midway through the second quarter but CUH’s defense allowed just one field goal in the final four minutes while Martinez, Morris and Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) each had free throws to reduce the home team’s deficit to 32-24 at halftime.
Chaminade opened the second half by out-pointing the Vulcans, 8-2, with Scanlan getting half including her first collegiate field goal to start the third quarter. The ‘Swords closed to within four points on three occasions but could not get past that differential.
However, UH Hilo slowly built its lead, with a 3-pointer with 1:09 left in the third quarter, giving them an 11-point edge, holding on to the double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Chaminade made 31 percent of its shots (18-of-58) and was 14-of-22 from the free throw line. UH Hilo made 41.5 from the floor (27-of-65) and 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. The Vulcans also committed just six turnovers.
The Silverswords will make their first road trip of the season when they face Academy of Art in Belmont, California, this Saturday at the Walter Gleason Gym on the Notre Dame de Namur campus. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. Hawai’i time.
