The Kealakehe Waveriders girls’ basketball team won their first game of the season with a quick start.
Junior Pearl Delos Santos led the Waveriders to an 18-0 lead over the Cougars of Keaau, on their way to a win of 50-39. Delos Santos was the team’s top scorer with 10 points in the first quarter, as Kealakehe took an early lead.
Halftime saw the Waveriders lead at 20 after Kylea Medeiros’ buzzer beating halfcourt shot made it a 28-8 lead.
Keeau relied heavily on Olivia Yasutake in the second half to slowly chip away at Waverider’s lead. Olivia, a Keaau junior, scored 19 out of 26 game-high points in the second half.
Kealakehe’s Medeiros was also the only player to reach double digits, scoring 1 points.
Keaau (0-3 BIIF), will host their next match, when Waiakea is in town on January 19, while Kealakehe (1-1), will travel to Hilo to play on Monday.
