Nearly everyone who was involved on Tuesday can’t wait or the rematch tonight.
After beating Baldwin 42-40, Kamehameha Schools Maui Warriors forced the showdown tonight for the MIL title. The game went to the final buzzer.
The overall championship game is set for King Kekaulike Gym at 7 p.m.
Kale Spencer scored 24 points to the Warriors. He is excited for tonight’s match between the two teams who have already secured state tournament berths.
At halftime, the Bears led 20-19. Spencer’s inside basket gave Warriors a 21-20 advantage early in the third quarter.
Quintan Akaka, of the Baldwin Bears, snagged a rebound from his own miss shot, scored, and completed a three point play with 6:16 left in the third.
Then Bears, Kobe Gonzales, followed with a breakaway layup, making it 25-21 Bears.
The Warriors made a free throw the Spencer hit a 3-pointer at 4:45 mark in the third quarter to tie the game 25-25.
Gonzales made two free shots to give the Bears the lead back at 27-25 lead at 4:23 in the third.
Then Warrior Po’okela Aiu hit a 3, giving Kamehameha Schools Maui the lead 28-27 just a minute later.
Then Spencer grabbed a rebound and put it back in to increase the lead to 30-27, with just 2:51 remaining in the third.
The Bears then hit a 2 pointer followed by a 3 pointer from Akaka. Then Gonzales made a free throw, taking the Bears up heading into the final quarter.
Hudson Yarbrough scored in the paint after Alex Murata’s assist pass. This hoop gave the Bears a 35-30 lead.
But Spencer responded, knocking down a 3, bringing the Warriors within two.
Richie Davenport hit a free throw with 3:59 left to bring the Warriors to within 1. With 3:08 remaining, Dylan Schnitzer completed a fast-break to give the Warriors a lead of 36-35.
Schnitzer made an excellent pass, an alley-oop, to Spencer. Spenser then skipped it off the glass to increase the Warriors’ lead to 38-35.
Then Aiu found Kaniau Chow under the basket for a layup that pushing the lead to 40-35.
Baldwin Bears coach Cody Tesoro called a timeout at 1:25 to play in the game.
Yarbrough missed a 3 from the corner. Schnitzer was fouled, and made one free throw with 58 second remaining. Yarbrough scored quickly from the inside. Then Akaka hit a long 3 of the glass, to bring the Bears within 1 with 15 seconds remaining 41-40.
Spencer was fouled immediately and missed the first free throw. He hit the second one to make it final margin of victory.
In the last regular-season match for both teams, the Warriors (8-2) defeated the Bears (65-52).
