TURLOCK, Calif.–The UH Hilo softball team dug deep in a 7-5 victory over Cal State San Bernardino at Pedretti Park.
Nikki Zielinski cracked open the 0-0 ball game in the fourth inning with a no-doubter over left center (1-0).
Cal State San Bernardino responded immediately with 5 runs in the fifth inning (5-1).
The Vulcans, chasing four runs, came back in the bottom of the fifth. Two Yote errors and four Vulcan hits led to a four-run inning for the Red and Black.
Brandee Chinen scored the first run with a single to the pitcher (5-2). Chinen eventually scored on CSUSB’s third baseman’s throwing error (5-3).
A single to center by Taisha Bratton scored the next run (5-4). Then came Chloe Domingo up to bat with two outs. Domingo produced a clutch double that tied up the game 5-5.
The Vulcans put up four more hits in the sixth inning, scoring two additional runs. Singles by Arissa Lugo and Domingo cashed in what would be the final runs of the game.
Tehani Seto began the game in the circle where she went four innings before Sara Bhatt came in to close. Bhatt was on fire, striking out seven batters in the final 2.1 innings including striking out the side in the seventh.
UH Hilo is playing now against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
