The University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans, a defensive-minded team, held high scoring Azusa Pacific Cougars well below their season average scoring. However, it was not enough to keep the number 3 nationally ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars their 13th consecutive win at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium on Thursday. The Vulcans lost 67-54.
The Cougars are the Pacific West Conference’s leaders and improved to 16-1 on the season and to 12-0 in conference play. The Vulcans fell to 8-7 this season, and 5-6 in Pacific West Conference.
The Cougars won one of the 13 games, during their win streak, against the Vulcans in Azusa on January 22, 79-58. This game was a different story. The Vulcans gave the league leaders everything they could handle for the first three quarters of play.
Next, the Vulcans will travel to Honolulu to play make-up games at Hawaii Pacific on February 8 and Chaminade on the 9th.
