Men’s Basketball Begins Six-Game Homestand Versus Saint Francis

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women’s volleyball team got yet another balanced attack Friday in a 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 win over Academy of Art, the team’s first game at McCabe Gymnasium since Aug. 20.

Five Silverswords had six or more kills, paced by Sasha Colombo (Milan, Italy/Colorado State/Liceo Scientifico Giordano Bruno HS) who put down a team-high nine and hit .412 to help Chaminade extend its winning streak to five, all via straight sets.

Greta Corti (Varese, Italy/Univ. of San Francisco/Alessandro Manzoni Liceo HS) added another eight kills while Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany/Alaska/Schul- and Leistungsportszentrum Berlin HS) contributed with seven along with four blocks. Putting down six each were Lataisia Saulala (Morgan Hill, Calif./Oakwood) and Brooklen Pe’a (Woods Cross, Utah/Youngstown State/Bountiful HS).

The Silverswords’ (8-6, 3-0 Pacific West Conference) current run of 15 consecutive sets won is one shy of the school record of 16 set twice, last in achieved in August 2005. They also extended their winning streak against the Urban Knights to 11.

Amalie Rupertova led ART U (1-11, 0-3 PacWest) with nine kills.

The opening set had the early tones of a runaway with Chaminade taking a 12-8 lead in the opening day. However the Urban Knights took advantage of several CUH miscues, took a 15-14 advantage and forced several late ties including at 23-all. However Saulala pounded down a kill to for set point followed by a hitting error which allowed the ‘Swords to escape in taking the first set.

Despite surrendering four straight point to open the second set, Chaminade roared back, taking the lead for good at 9-8 and ending it on an 8-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.

ART U continued to play impressively in the match, as a 7-0 run would help put them up 11-9 in the third. Later, the visitors took a 17-16 lead but another 8-1 CUH surge set up match point. Pe’a ended the match on the team’s second aloha ball.

Chaminade hit .248 on the night and held the Urban Knights to a .092 percentage. The ‘Swords also benefitted at the service line by getting 10 aces for their second straight match. Corti had three of them while Nanna Inoue (Kula, Maui, Hawai’i/Tyler JC/King Kekaulike HS) and Allexis Iramina (Honolulu/Moanalua) had two each.

Corti had 11 digs for the Chaminade while Inoue and Alexia Byrnes (Chicago/Youngstown State/Saint Francis HS) each had nine. Byrnes also had 17 assists with Alecza Abary (Fontana, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) pitching in with eight.

The Silverswords are back in McCabe Gym Saturday against Fresno Pacific which swept Hawai’i Pacific University on Friday. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
