HONOLULU – The Hawai’i Pacific University women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 to Fresno Pacific University Friday night at the Shark Tank.
The Sharks (0-9, 0-3) put themselves in position all night but could not close the sets when needed. The Sunbirds (5-3, 4-0) improve their win streak to five as they face PacWest favorite Chaminade to close out their Hawai’i road trip.
HPU jumped on FPU early by building out a 15-9 lead on freshman outside Marley Sandoval’s five first-set kills. The Sunbirds flipped the script headed down the stretch and tied the game at 21-21 before closing out the first set 25-22.
After the intermission, HPU started slowly with a four-point deficit before senior middle Demi Winters got the Sharks on the board. Hawai’i gradually overcame the lead when freshman Lindsey Tapp aced Fresno to take a 13-12 lead. The rest of the set was back and forth until the Sunbirds sided out to claim the second set 25-23.
Hawai’i hit their game-best .206 with fifteen kills in set two. Four attackers had three kills, while sophomore setter Pua Beazley and graduate Maile Powell garnered five assists each in the set.
The Sharks kept the score close halfway through the third, but a couple of errors and an offensive run from FPU handed the Sharks the loss 25-19.
Tapp and Winters shared the top spot with seven kills. Beazley had a season-high 21 assists on the night, tied for a season-team-best.
The Sharks have a quick turnaround with another match tomorrow night, as they host the Academy of Art at 7 p.m. at the Shark Tank.
