INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Tenth ranked Hawai’i Pacific University is the No. 1 seed in the Women’s NCAA Division II West Region and will host a regional match as the selections for the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships were announced on Tuesday by the NCAA Division II Tennis Committee.
The Sharks (15-8 overall, 14-4 Division II), the top seed in the West, will host fourth seeded and No. 31 Point Loma (19-7 overall, 14-5 Division II) in the West Region 1 championship match on Friday, May 6. The match starts at 3 p.m. at the Kailua Racquet Club. Admission is free.
The winner of the match advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 17-21.
It’s the 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the HPU women who have reached the national semifinals in five of the last eight tournaments.
It’s the first time this season that Point Loma and HPU will meet, with HPU holding a 7-0 record against the Sea Lions since 2014. The Sharks won the last match between the schools on April 16, 2021 in San Diego. This will also mark the Sharks first appearance against Point Loma in the state of Hawai’i.
The West Region 2 championship match features second seeded and 15th ranked Azusa Pacific (18-4 Division II) hosting third seeded and 37th ranked Fresno Pacific (13-7). That winner also advances to the national championships.
The NCAA and the ITA computer rankings do not use the same criteria, thus the difference between the rankings.
