INDIANAPOLIS — The Hawai’i Pacific University women’s tennis team is the number five seed for next week’s NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., a suburb of Orlando.
The Sharks (16-8), the top seed of the West Region and ranked 10th nationally by the ITA, were selected the number five seed by the 2022 NCAA Division II Tennis Committee. They meet 12th seeded West Virginia State (14-7), a third seed in the Atlantic Region and ranked 53rd by the ITA, in the round of 16 on Tuesday, May 17 at 6 a.m. HST (Noon EDT) at Sanlando Park.
The winner of the match advances to the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 18 at 10 a.m. HST (4 p.m. EDT) against the winner of fourth seeded Nova Southeastern (Fla.) (18-3, No. 2 ITA) and 13th seeded Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (16-7, No. 39 ITA).
The rest of HPU’s side of the bracket has top seeded Barry (Fla.) (20-0, No. 1 ITA) against 16th seeded Franklin Pierce (13-2, No. 67 ITA), and eighth seeded Flagler (Fla.) (17-7, No. 11 ITA) against ninth seeded Saint Mary’s (Texas) (14-3, No. 20 ITA).
The other half of the bracket features second-seeded Central Oklahoma (17-1, No. 4 ITA) versus 15th seeded Washburn (Kan.) (15-11, No. 54 ITA), seventh-seeded Azusa Pacific (19-4, No. 15 ITA) battling 10th seeded Indiana (Pa.) (14-4, No. 38 ITA), third-seeded Indianapolis (16-2, No. 12 ITA) against 14th seeded Wilmington (Del.) (15-2, No. 45 ITA), and sixth seeded Columbus State (Ga.) (17-5, No. 6 ITA) against 11th seeded Cameron (Okla.) (19-3, No. 9 ITA).
The national semifinal is set for Friday, May 20 and the national championship is on tap for Saturday, May 21. Both matches are slated for 10 a.m. HST (4 p.m. EDT).
