WAIPAHU – The Hawai’i Pacific University took the top spot in the women’s and men’s races as the Sharks handily won the 2022 Chaminade Invitational at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The Sharks women scored 22 points to beat Chaminade with 51 points and UH Hilo with 57 points. The Sharks men’s team defeated Chaminade in their dual 17-40.
Graduate Karen Corona-Perez, finished first for HPU, coming across the line at 20:18.8, five seconds behind first place finisher from Chaminade. The Sharks collected five of the top 10 slots represented by: Sophomore Emma Dominguez (20:23.4), Senior Maggie Meeds (20:32.1), Freshman Anna Hildebrand (21:02.9), and Sophomore Zamira Broadhurst-Hall (21:26.6) to round out the scoring times.
Junior McKay Guckenberg finished 11th, with a 22:45.6. Sophomore Jadelyn Rodriguez followed her with a 12th place finish at 23:12.5. Junior Alyssa D’Arpa snagged the third consecutive finish for the Sharks in 14th with a 23:14.2. Rounding out the squad was Freshman Maya Pompel in 20th, with a time of 24:48.8.
The Sharks men’s team dominated the matchup, with Chaminade scoring in the 1-2-3-4-7 slots. Graduate Justin Todd took first overall in the 7.28-kilometer race at 24:32.3. Junior Troy Oshimo followed closely behind at 23:43.5. Freshman Tyler Stoker debuted with a third-place time of 25:23.2. While Sophomore Kent Glover finished fourth at 26:08.9. The last scoring time came from Freshman Angel Aviles at 26:48.7.
Other finishers for the HPU included: Sophomore Joseph Moran at 27:50.5, Senior David Rutto at 28:22.8, Sophomore Logan Thomas at 28:25.1, and Freshman Cash Schwemer at 29:38.4.
The Sharks next compete in the USCM Cougar Challenge at Mangrum Track and Field Complex in San Marcos, Calif. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
