With a 59 to 48 win the University of Hawai’i women’s basketball team captured the Big West Tournament. They beat the UC Irvine Anteate, Saturday at The Dollar Loan Center.
This was the culmination of a historic run by UH’s 2021-22 team. This is the first Rainbow Wahine who have won both the regular-season title and the tournament title in the same season. The streak spans more than 35 years worth of conference play. It’s the University of Hawaii’s third ever Big West Tournament title, and the first since 2016. The Rainbow Wahine are onto the NCAA Tournament.
The ‘Bows (20-9), won it with a strong performance in the second half. UH took the lead after trailing by five at the half. They used a 14-0 quarter-final run to take the lead and never lost it again. Amy Atwell scored 13 points, Olivia Davies added a team high14, going a perfect 9-9 from the foul line. Daejah Phillips almost completed a double-double, scoring 8 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Rainbow Warriors beat the 21-11 UCI Anteaters, ending the their six game win streak. UH has now won eight consecutive games.
The ‘Bows are now awaiting their place in the 68 field NCAA Tournament. The selection show will air on ESPN Sunday at 2:00 PM HT.
