Chrislyn and Ty Simpson-Kane, siblings, may be the first brother-sister pair to win individual titles Saturday when top MIL surfers hit the waves at Hookipa Beach Park.
Ty, a Kamehameha Maui Warriors senior, won two team events at boys Number 1. Ty won the chest-high surf contest at D.T. Fleming. He had a come from behind win in large surf at Lahaina Harbor. Ty was third at overhead surf at Koki Beach
Chrislyn, a freshman homeschooler, Hawaii Academy, competes for the King Kekaulike Na Alii. She took wins at D.T. Fleming and Koki Beach. Chrislyn was second at Lahaina Harbor.
Simpson-Kane were awarded the Duke Award in Honolulu last Friday. This $15,000 scholarship recognizes a high school senior from Hawaii who exhibits the personality and character traits of Duke Kahanamoku.
Simpson-Kane plans to attend the California Maritime Academy and will enroll in the marine transportation program.
