WAIPAHU – The Hawai’i Pacific University men’s soccer team, fell 2-1 to Westminster College Sunday afternoon at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
The Sharks (0-2-2) made a late push but could not find their first win over the Griffins (3-2), who picked up their third straight win.
Westminster was in control of the game in the first half when they scored in the 21st minute. HPU found themselves with chances putting three shots on goal but did not manage one in the first 45 minutes.
Things intensified in the second half, where HPU picked up their first yellow and Westminster their second of the match. The Griffins pushed across their second goal of the afternoon after a foul committed inside the box gave up a penalty shot. The Sharks, under pressure, responded with their first goal from graduate forward Austin Stafford, assisted by graduate midfielder Dominic Toone in the 74th minute. With the momentum shifting, Hawai’i ran out of time with a final of 2-1.
Graduate goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski snagged three saves in his start in goal today. Stafford picked up his first goal of the season.
The Sharks head to Hilo next to face UH Hilo for their last non-conference matchup of the year, with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. HT on Saturday, Sept. 17.
