HONOLULU – Hawai’i goalkeeper Lauren Marquez earned Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday after posting a shutout in a 1-0 win over UC Davis in Thursday’s conference opener.
The graduate student posted her second clean sheet of the season and the fifth of her career, making a pair of second-half saves to preserve the victory. Marquez made a number of big plays in the net down the stretch, including a huge save on a UC Davis corner kick attempt with eight minutes to play and UH ahead by a goal.
Marquez currently leads the conference in goals allowed average, giving up just 0.857 goals per match over 315 minutes of action in the net. The Glendale, Ariz., native is the only qualified Big West goalkeeper allowing fewer than a goal per match and is one of five goalies in the league with multiple shutouts on the season.
