The Man-up Stand-up event was April 30th on Oahu.
Brody Melendez (14 years old) felt nervous when he stepped into the ring at the Man-up Standup kickboxing event last weekend in Waianae.
The crowd was cheering for, Kapena Fugishige of Waianae, his opponent. Fugishige weighed in 20 pounds heavier than Melendez.
After Brody had taken his first punch, however, all the nerves disappeared.
Fugishige won the fight in a verry close slit decision.
Waimea Meyer, (14 years old), also found comfort in the ring, after taking his first hit at Man-up Standup from Jonny Shoemaker of Waianae.
Waimea picked up the win over Shoemaker who was also overweight.
Both fighters received inter-island belts at the end of the competition.
Meyer and Melendez are from Kalaheo and Hanapepe, they started their training at Hawaiian Fighting Arts, Hanapepe.
They attend Waimea Canyon Middle school together. They spar often together to sharpen their skills.
