After a thrilling race at Kahului Harbor on Saturday, the Seabury Hall canoe paddle team won the Maui Interscholastic League title with gold in the girls section.
The Spartans and King Kekaulike were left with two wins each after Seabury’s victory in the half mile race over Lahainaluna at the last MIL regatta this season. This forced Na Alii and the Spartans into a quarter mile race for the league title. i
Earlier Saturday the crowd was waiting on the shore as the girls paddled to the start line of the half mile race. Last week, the Spartans were disqualified and the Lunas won out over Na Alii. This left the girls crown will be up for grabs.
Lahainaluna led going down the homestretch but Seabury pulled out the last strokes to win in 4 minutes 36.16. The Lunas came in second (4:31.04), and King Kekaulike was third (4:36.20).
The Spartans and Na Alii girls were still sweating after the first race. They took a short rest during the boys’ varsity event, before returning to the quarter-mile tiebreaker.
Seabury Head Coach Paul Lu’uwai reiterated to the team throughout the week that it was important to race smart and not over think things.
Senior Natalie Dziuban, seated in the 3rd row for King Kekaulike said that it was an “unreal feeling” to paddle on Maui for her last high school athletic event.
Her teammates from the mixed, boys, and girls teams will still be representing the MIL in a few weeks, March 5th, at the state championships at Keehi Lagoon, as well as all Seabury’s crews.
The Spartans’ mixed and boys crews won MIL titles earlier this month at the third league regatta — Lahainaluna’s girls crew, and Kamehameha Maui’s mixed and boys teams.
