INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 4 Hawai’i Pacific University is the top seed in the Men’s NCAA Division II West Region and will host a regional match as the selections for the 2022 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championships were announced Tuesday by the NCAA Division II Tennis Committee.
As the top seed, the Sharks (16-2) will host fourth seeded and No. 41 Hawai’i Hilo (9-9) in the West Region 1 championship match on Monday, May 9. The match starts at 3 p.m. at the Kailua Racquet Club. Admission is free.
The winner of the match advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 18-22.
The Sharks have qualified for 13 of the last 14 NCAA Tournaments, and were the winners of the 2016 Division II National Championship.
This is the fourth time that HPU and UH Hilo will play this season, with the Sharks holding a 2-1 advantage. HPU won the last meeting with the Vulcans 4-2 in the PacWest Conference semifinals on April 22 in Surprize, Ariz. The last 10 matches between the teams are split 5-5.
The West Region 2 championship match features second seeded and 14th ranked Azusa Pacific (15-3 Division II) hosting third seeded and 46th ranked Biola (12-7 Division II). That winner also advances to the national championships.
The NCAA and the ITA computer rankings do not use the same criteria, thus the difference between the rankings.
