The Hawaii Prep Ka Makani, knew from the beginning, that they would be attacking quickly and often.
The Ka Makani won Monday’s HHSAA first round contest against the Kalaheo Mustangs. They raced to a 12-0 start and were able to move onto round quarterfinal on Thursday.
The Na Makani used a suffocating defensive attack to ignite their offense. Maile Imonen and Claire Hughes were the main beneficiaries of Hawaii Prep’s fast break. Hughes had eight goals to lead the team and Imonen added six goals. Ali Wawner and Gracie Tadaki each hit for four goals.
With just two minutes remaining before halftime, the Mustangs scored their first goal of day. The game though had already been decided.
The Hawaii Prep Na Makani next opponent is the second-seeded OIA Champions, Roosevelt Rough Riders. The game is Thursday. at 5:45 p.m., at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama facility on Oahu.
The Waiakea Warriors lost to The Kamehameha-Kapalama Warriors 21-1 in the HHSAA’s only other opening-round contest on Monday that featured a Big Island school.
The Kamehameha Hawaii Warriors will take on the Kaiser Cougars. The Cougars beat the Mililani Trojans 14-4 in their HHSAA opener. The contest between fourth-seeded Warriors & Cougars will begin at 3:15 p.m. at the KS-Kapalama facility.
