The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team defeated Cal State Fullerton 54 to 52 on Saturday night.
The Hawaii women won their Big West Conference basketball opener with Amy Atwell’s layup in the final 5.3 seconds.
Hawaii moves up to 4-6 overall. Cal State Fullerton falls to 5-6.
Since their Dec. 21 UNLV loss, the ‘Bows have not played a game. Due to ongoing COVID-19 issues, only nine players were available for Saturday’s game.
The ‘Bows trailed by 10 and then went on a 9-0 run to close the third quarter. The momentum carried over into the fourth quarter where Hawaii made its last three field goals.
Atwell led the ‘Bows by scoring a double-double, with 20 points in the game and 12 rebounds for a career high.
Cal State Fullerton’s Lily Wahinekapu, a ‘Iolani alum, had a team high nine points and five rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine will traveling for two conference road games. They will be starting at UC San Diego on Thursday. Tipoff will take place at 5 p.m. HST.
