The No. 1 University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors men’s volleyball team opened their 2022 season with a victory over the No. 7 Loyola-Chicago Ramblers. The match was played at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center last night.
Last nights match against Loyola-Chicago was Hawaii’s first home contest with fans in the seats since the five-set thriller against BYU on March 6, 2020. It was also a sellout in front of fans.
Before Wednesday’s contest, the 2021 national team was honored with a banner ceremony. It was led by Colton Cowell, a Maui native and one of the 2021 team captains.
The Rainbow Warriors dominated Set 1 before 2,092 fans. The team scored a hit efficient.609.This included no attacking, blocking, service or reception errors.
UH Warriors recovered from an 11-7 early deficit to win the second set and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
To complete the sweep, Hawaii took an 8-0 lead during the third set, and was able to sweep the match, to go 1-0 in its 2022 campaign.
Jakob Thelle, the setter, set the pace for a balanced offensive attack by achieving a match-high 33 assists for the Rainbow Warriors. Chaz Galloway, a sophomore, had 11 kills.
Loyola-Chicago Rambler (0-1), Cole Schlothauer, had 10 kills.
This Friday, 7 p.m.: The Rainbow Warriors will end their two-game series against the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers.
