Gene Okamura has spent nearly a decade coaching at his alma mater starting in 2013 as an assistant coach at Hawai‘i Hilo.
In 2016, Okamura was named head coach of both the Vulcans men’s and women’s soccer programs before coaching only the women’s team starting in 2018.
2022 was a historic season for the Vulcans as they shared the title of PacWest Conference Co-Champions after finishing tied atop the regular season standings with a 9-1-0 record, but due to winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Point Loma, Hawai‘i Hilo earned the conference automatic qualifier bid to advance to the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship postseason for the first time.
The Hawai‘i-native has also split his time in the spring as head coach of the Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i girls and boys soccer teams with a HHSAA Boys Division II State Championship in 2022 and a girls state runner-up finish in 2016.
Okamura was one of the first three players recruited to play for the Hawai‘i Hilo men’s soccer inaugural season.
