HILO, Hawai’i – The Chaminade University men’s and women’s cross country teams returned to action for their third race of the season Saturday at the University of Hawai’i Hilo Invitational at the Grand Naniloa Golf Course.

It was the first time in three years both teams were competing on the Big Island. Both Silversword squads did not have enough runners to qualify for team scores in the spring 2021 UH Hilo Invitational while the 2021 event was canceled due to health and safety protocols.

In the 8-kilometer men’s race which opened the meet, Chaminade finished second with 31 points while Hawai’i Pacific University captured the team title with 24.

Owen Daugherty (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) finished third overall with a finishing time of 28 minutes, 6.1 seconds. Peter Jan Ramos (Waipahu, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Waipahu) was right behind at 28:19.9 to finish fourth.

Elijah Bernardo-Flores (Waipahu, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Kamehameha-Kapalama), Peyton Oshiro (Honolulu/Hawai’i Baptist Academy) and Ben Salinas (Highland, Ind./Western Colorado Univ./Highland HS) finished seventh through ninth overall, respectively. Bernardo-Flores completed the course in 29:07.1, Oshiro at 29:20.2 and Salas at 29:30.9.

Conor McMahon (Pacific, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) logged a time of 34:06.0.

The Sharks’ Troy Oshimo captured the men’s individual title with a time of 27:31.3, nearly 10 seconds better than teammate and No. 2 finisher Tyler Stoker.

In the women’s 5-k, the ‘Swords compiled 40 points to finish second, just eight behind HPU’s 32 and eight ahead of host UH Hilo.

Zoe McDonough (Fremont, Calif./Washington) finished as the women’s individual runner-up, crossing the tape at 20:22.9. HPU’s Karen Corona Perez was the women’s winner at 20:03.1.

Anne Drelling (Orange County, Calif./Canyon) was the next Silversword to finish, coming in seventh overall at 21:14.1 while Caitlin Bocobo (Mililani, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Mililani) finished in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish in 21:20.5.

Eri Leong (Las Vegas/SECTA) crossed the finish line in 22:18.7 followed by Leila-Jayne Casison (Waipahu, O’ahu, Hawai’i/Waipahu) at 22:36.2 and Montserrat Lanfranco (Honolulu/Roosevelt) at 23:39.7.

The Silverswords are back in action next Saturday in the HPU Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course, which will be their final regular season competition of the season. The opening race is scheduled at 7 a.m.
