On Saturday, a long-distance Big Island Interscholastic Federation paddling meet was held at Hilo Bay.
It was a day of appreciation to paddlers who have been out on the water since last year, February 8, 2020.
On that date the state championships were held at Keehi Lagoon on Oahu.
That day Hawaii Prep boys placed sixth and third in the half-mile mixed races. The Keaau girls finished was sixth. i
Kamehameha won the competition in the 3-mile rectangular run inside Hilo Bay with an unofficial time of 23 minutes. Keaau came in second, and Pahoa was third.
The BIIF canoe paddle paddling championships have been held for twenty seasons and no school has ever won all three races.
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation Canoe Paddling Championship sweep is the most elusive title sweep of all the league’s sports.
In 2020, the Cougars won the girls BIIF title while HPA’s mixed and boys crews took home the gold.
